Biological Oxygen Demand: BOD |
| It serves as a measure of the level of organic waste in water that requires oxygen for its decomposition, by bacterial action. It indicates the organic matter present in the water, because the more there is, the more active the aerobic bacteria will be, and the more oxygen will be consumed. It is the oxygen that is consumed in a certain volume of water in a fixed period of time (5 days), at a constant temperature (20ºC) and in dark conditions. Therefore if the BOD is high indicates contamination and poor quality of this water and vice versa. Drinking water has a BOD of 0.75 to 1.5 ppm. |
